Jayl's tribute to the late great Joe Strummer ('leader' of The Clash), London, the Arsenal and the London Underground, reputedly the most haunted place in England. 'Ghosts of the Underground' is also another historic collaboration between Jayl and the immensely talented singer-songwriter-guitarist Andy Wood (aka AC Wood). All the lyrics and vocals are by Jayl who read and studied Kris Needs' excellent book on The Clash before composing the song. Joe Strummer loved London and the song itself is partly inspired by the urban style of The Clash, particularly their later work and their triple album masterpiece Sandinista. The less earthy supernatural lyrical premise of the song is the many ghosts and strange happenings that have been reported on the London Underground. Imagine the layers of history that were disturbed during its construction, many old burial sites were discovered from the Roman times of old Londinium, through the medieval era and the mass pits of the time of the Black Death. Such mass disturbance would not have been without consequence! Moreover, many died during the underground's construction and many have died on the underground over the years since the first line opened in 1863. There have been infamous disasters such as Moorgate and King's Cross. So it is no surprise that their have been so many 'siteings and reports over the years by staff and passengers alike.
